The Department of Natural Resources in Iowa has an opening for an Environmental Specialist in the Air Quality Bureau – Program Development Section.
Job description: The purpose of this position is to conduct, review, interpret, and provide reports on air dispersion modeling of air emission sources under the direction of a lead worker. Modeling to be performed will include ambient air quality analyses for minor source permit applications, Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) permit applications, and special projects as directed by the supervisor and lead worker.
Air dispersion modeling duties will include obtaining source operating information and parameters from bureau engineering staff and permit applications, selecting and inputting source and meteorological data into the model, and executing the model runs. The position will use meteorological data processors to format raw meteorological data for model input, and quality assure and correct meteorological data and fields generated by the processors. The position will interpret and verify model results, including the creation of reports with summaries of model assumptions, inputs, results, and notation of modeling analysis discrepancies and suggested corrective actions.
Abilities and skills: This position requires a general knowledge of meteorological concepts, principles, and environmental factors as they apply to air quality. Candidates must have the ability to understand air dispersion modeling concepts, as well as regulatory laws and rules for air quality standards and relevant permits; must have the ability to use computer programs to analyze and model meteorological data, as well as PC based word processing and database programs; must have the ability to manage numerous projects and tasks; must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with staff and customers in both local government and industry; must be able to effectively work in a team environment. The position requires the ability to travel and occasional overnight stays. The candidate must possess careful attention to detail, capacity to adjust to change, work pressures or difficult situations without undue stress and an ability to work independently; must demonstrate initiative, a customer service and team orientation, and display high standards of ethical conduct. Position is full time and as such, requires regular, punctual attendance.
